It's time...

September 27, 2011

I have always said, “Blogs are for married people.” Well, guess what? I am married. I guess it’s time to join the rest of my friends in the blogging world.
I have had a difficult time starting our blog. For some reason, I feel like the first post has to be a really GREAT post. It has to be something awe-inspiring...mind-boggling...remarkable…perfect. Blah blah blah. I guess I feel this way because someone once told me, “If you want people to read your blog then you have to always provide quality”. Ummmm…..What’s with all the unnecessary blog pressure? Is it really that big of a deal? NO. It’s an online journal for my husband and I to keep. We can laugh at our lives, post dumb pictures, stay in touch with long lost friends, and we can look back at all the memories we have made together. What’s so bad about all that?
I have enjoyed reading some blogs by my girlfriends and I have to admit that a lot of their posts are so amazing. I love getting a sneak peek into their life even when they are miles away. It’s funny to see how we are all in such different parts of our lives. One of my best friends (Andrea) has twins and a toddler and lives in the middle of nowhere. Another one of my besties (Alisha) is seriously dating a guy and making lots of money. Then we have Julie who has a little girl and a husband finishing up medical school and Sally who is prego with her first little boy! Morgan has her first baby and Brittany just moved back to Arizona from Chicago…the list goes on and on.
Then we have me. I am a newlywed finishing the last year of my Masters. I work at a hospital in the Psych Unit where I see crazy things every day. One lady was admitted into the hospital because she wants to drown her three children. Another one hears people telling him to kill himself. They present to the hospital with suicidal and homicidal ideation and are at their lowest point in their lives. They have audio and visual hallucinations. If you think your low in life was unbearable, you should spend a few minutes with these people. I work with victims of rape, physical and emotional abuse, domestic violence, etc. etc. Then somehow, with my year and few months of writing research papers and taking tests under my belt, I am supposed to sit with them for an hour and make them feel better?! I am supposed to find out what is behind their feelings and how we can change their thinking patterns? Is that possible? I handed a lady a pen the other day to sign a form and she wouldn’t touch it without sanitizing it first. She wouldn’t open a door without cleaning the knob. She wouldn’t sit in a chair without putting a towel down first. I come home everyday feeling thankful that I have been so blessed. It helps me to not take things for granted and it helps me to not blow my “problems” out of proportion. I just wish I could tell these people that they are children of God and He loves them so much. I am so lucky to have the gospel in my life and to know that I am a daughter of Heavenly Father. If only these people at the hospital knew that too.
Married life is incredible. I never thought that I could learn so much and have so fun in these last few months. We have experienced more than we ever could have imagined in these 7 months, and I am so grateful for our marriage. I am so proud of my husband because he is in his first year of dental school and he is rockin’ it. He molded a tooth out of wax the other day and got one of the best grades in the class. He is good with his hands! I am proud of him and he inspires me with all his self-discipline and motivation! I married Mr. Smarty-pants. He also looks dang hot in his scrubs, so I’m not complaining! Well, enough with the rambling. Cheers to the first post!
