"That Girl Doesn't Match"

I was walking down the hallway at church today and I overheard two little girls talking. They couldn't have been more than 8-years-old. They were giggling and sounded like they were BFFs. It took me back to when I was giggling with all my best friends on the playground at school. We talked about boys and recess and math and teachers. And more boys. Oh, good times. I thought to myself, "I wonder what those two girls are talking about?" Boy, did I ask for it.

I walked right by them and I heard the one girl whisper to the other, "That girl doesn't even match." And they giggled and giggled some more. I stopped in my fluorescent wedges and stood in that hallway for a minute or two. I looked around. What? Me? I was the only other person in the abandoned hallway. She was definitely talking about me. At first, I was caught off guard and didn't know how to react.  I wasn't totally offended...i mean, she was only 8ish. And who does she think she is wearing zebra print and hot pink ribbons in her hair? Come on (mostly joking). I thought we would have been best friends because she got the animal print memo. I guess not.

Maybe it was the fact that I was dressed like an 8-year-old? I'm not sure. It felt like she was saying, "I have that shirt and blazer and skirt and I would have never paired them together. Not. Ever. Ugh. What was she thinking?" That's what I thought I heard out of her mouth. That's what I formed in my own head after she said her simple comment. I was so quick to take offense and blow it up, and sad to say it was by an 8-year-old. She even might have been 7-years-old. I guess I'll never know...until next Sunday when I confront her and teach her about style (mostly joking, again). Doesn't she know that I tried not to match on purpose. Doesn't she know mixing prints and playing with patterns is what the fashionistas do?

You know, not everyone is going to like what you pick out to wear that day. Not everyone is going to say, "I like your outfit," or "That is totally flattering." We all have different a sense of style and that is what I love about fashion! Not everyone will like it! If they did, we would all be wearing leopard print skirts with shirts that say 'HAPPY'. How boring would that be?

Isn't it funny that when someone says something offensive to you, we blow it up even bigger than it already is? It might have been a hill and we turn it into a mountain?  I hear things people say and I'm sometimes quick to take offense. I want to be less offended and more confident. Being offended is for the weak.

I then saw my friends Marcy and Camille (not 8-years-old, I might add), and told them what had just happened. They laughed and said, "Doesn't that girl know you are the most stylish girl in the church ward." While that is definitely not true, it did make everything better.

I'm sure if that 8-year-old-zebra-print-wearing-girl got to know me, she would totally like me.
