The Smell of Books

November 21, 2013

Riggy loves books. He waves his arms excitedly when it's time to read. He knows it's coming right before bedtime and it's like he can't control himself...or his flailing arms. His favorite book right now is Dinosaurs Love Underpants. Not much meaning to it, but he likes the pictures. And he likes the button you push that roaaaarrrrssss. He gets to hold the books and he promptly puts it in his mouth and chews away. He also loves ripping the pages every time he gets a chance. He's 5 1/2 months and he is definitely an avid reader in the making. There are so many books on my list to buy. I put a question out there on my Instagram (@lacy_joy) before Riggins was born asking for book recommendations for him. This was the favorite list. I can't wait to collect them all.

Ferdinand the Bull
Don't Let Pigeon Drive the Bus
Pete's A Pizza
We are Going on a Bear Hunt
I Love you Through and Through
Babies
Llama Laama, Red Pajama
Moo, Baa, La, La, La
Where is Baby's Belly Button?
The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar
Bear Snores On
I love you Stinky Face
The Little Blue Truck
Green Eggs and Ham
Chicka Chicka, Boom Boom
Brown Bear, Brown Bear
Goodnight Moon
Where the Wild Things Are
Goodnight Gorilla
That's Not My Train
Click, Clack, Moo

My Favorite book to read to him is I Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. This book makes me tear up every. single. time I read it. It's about a mother holding her baby boy and singing:
"I'll love you forever
I'll like you for always
As long as I'm living forever and ever
My baby you'll be."
I change the words to forever and ever because Riggins will forever be my baby boy. The mom sings this to him until he is a grown man. She gets really sick and the end of the book the boy grabs his mom and sings the song to her. It's the sweetest thing I've ever read. If this little boy only knew how much he was loved.

Most of our time as mother and son is spent at this wonderful place pictured above. We try to go as much as we can to the library. We meet up with friends to go to story-time, puppet shows, just to rent books, and Riggy's favorite--singing time. It's pretty much just up the street from us and the smell of the library is absolutely amazing. I love the smell of books and the look of the shelves and the colors and the nice librarians, etc. etc. . Everything about it is just perfect. I used to be sooo into reading and things have just gone hill ever since I went to grad school. When I was forced to read piles of books for school, my recreational reading became non-existent. I'm getting it back though. It's my new goal. I rented The Happiness Project this past week and I'm enjoying it so far. A good book can make all the difference in my week. Any good books you have been reading? Any recommendations?

  2. I love this because I know once I have kids, they will be spoiled in books.

And a great read for you: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.
